Marine Structures Provides Fenders and Cleats for Cruz Bay Pier
Marine Structures is excited to join in the effort to rebuild the Cruz Bay Visitor’s Center and revive the tourism that helps the community of St. John thrive. For the repair of the bulkhead and pier, we were able to provide D-fenders and cleats.
The idyllic St. John was changed forever during the Fall of 2017 when two Category 5 hurricanes struck the island one after the other. On September 6, 2017, Hurricane Irma made landfall and tore down trees, poles and homes. Before the community had much chance to respond to the disaster, Hurricane Maria swept through 14 days later to take down what Hurricane Irma left behind. The island was left devastated and is understandably still working to repair all these years later.
The National Park Service stepped in during 2023 to begin the process of restoring the Cruz Bay Visitors Center, which sees an average of more than 450,000 visitors per year. The repairs to the bulkhead, pier and creek dredging were just the beginning of the restoration project.
According to the National Parks Service, “Virgin Islands National Park is excited to move forward with the marine work associated with this project. This work will provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for our visitors. This work compliments the playground renovations that are currently underway and the future plans for renovations to the pavilion and restrooms,” said Deputy Superintendent Scott Simmons.
